The Milwaukee Veterinary Medical Association's mission is to provide high quality continuing education for members, to foster fellowship among Milwaukee area veterinary professionals, to promote the profession to the general public, and to provide local leadership for veterinary related issues.

"5 Step Behavior Treatment Plan" (Click to view brochure.)

Case studies of a few of the common behavior issues I deal with on a regular basis including owner-directed aggression and on-leash reactivity (toward dogs, people, other triggers) with the behavior treatment plan presented as a 5 step program.


PRESENTED BY: Manette Kohler, DVM Veterinary; Behavior Consultant; Helping Hand Veterinary Behavior Counseling

Dr. Kohler is a small animal veterinarian in SE Wisconsin with a behavior-only practice, providing behavior consultations for dogs and cats in the clients' homes. After graduating from veterinary school (UW SVM Class of '91) she practiced general small animal medicine in Atlanta for 9 years before returning to WI. She left private practice and started Helping Hand Veterinary Behavior Counseling in 2009. She has contributed as a freelance writer and columnist for nationally recognized Dog World magazine and, currently, is the "Celebrity Paw Profile" columnist for FETCH magazine. Dr. Kohler has lectured locally and regionally, to veterinary audiences as well as pet owners and other pet professionals, on animal behavior topics including, Puppy Socialization, Canine Body Language and Bite Prevention, Dog Park Safety, Reiki for Animals, Behavior Wellness in Companion Animals and Feline Behavior. If she could have one wish granted, it would be for all pet owners to have loving, trusting, respectful and fulfilling relationships with their pets. Writing is one of her passions and she is happy to announce that her first children's book, "Bella's First Checkup" was just released.

"Solving the Allergy Puzzle" (Click to view brochure.)

Objectives:
- Discuss the varying clinical signs that are associated with allergies.
- Discuss diagnostic tests used in dermatology to rule out other causes of pruritus.
- Evaluate current treatment options that can provide relief for dogs with allergies.
- Review case examples of dogs with allergies that require multi-modal therapy to control symptoms.


PRESENTED BY: Amy Haarstad, DVM, DACVD - Haarstad Veterinary Dermatology Maple Grove, Minnesota

Dr. Amy Haarstad graduated in 2001 from North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. After graduation, Dr. Haarstad completed a one-year internship at Purdue University. She then returned to the Twin Cities and worked at a small animal practice for nine years. After her time in general practice, Dr. Haarstad participated in a three-year veterinary dermatology residency at McKeever Dermatology Clinics. She was board certified by the American College of Veterinary Dermatology (ACVD) in 2014. Haarstad Veterinary Dermatology (HVD) was founded in the fall of 2017. HVD is a mobile practice that brings dermatology specialty services directly to clients and patients in their primary clinic. Dr. Haarstad grew up in Maple Grove, MN and still lives there with her husband, Steve, their three daughters and pets. As a family, they enjoy a yearly trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) and playing volleyball.

This talk will be a brief review of cancer diagnonsis, staging, treatment options, brief review of radiation physics and biology, evolution or radiation therapy, current data and case presentations, current clinical trials.


PRESENTED BY: Kelsey Pohlmann, DVM, MS, DACVR-RO - Pet Cure Oncology

Dr. Pohlmann completed undergrad and veterinary school at the University of Georgia, completed one year rotating internship at Blue Pearl Georgia, completed three-year residency in radiation oncology at Colorado State University, currently lives in Loveland, CO and provides remote consultation and treatment planning for 6 out of the 8 PetCure facilities, mother to two under two and one furbaby black lab, Beamer.

"Digital Radiography: Past, Present & Future" (Click to view brochure.)

Digital radiography was brought to the imaging market in the early 1980s. Since that time the increasing power of computers and the advent of micro-electronics have allowed the development of faster, high resolution imaging systems. Recent research in software design has brought about the development of new, unique digital imaging applications. At the conclusion of this presentation, the attendee will be able to:
- Discuss the three methods of creating a digital radiograph.
- Understand the analog and digital imaging chain.
- Identify the advantages of digital imaging versus analog imaging.
- Appreciate the advanced applications for digital radiography.


PRESENTED BY: Thomas Hanson, DVM, MS Practice Limited to Diagnostic Imaging Wisconsin Veterinary Referral Center

Dr. Hanson received his DVM from St. George's University and completed a clinical year at Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine and his radiology residency at University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Hanson also has his MS degree in management from Cardinal Stritch University. Dr. Hanson completed a small animal internship at VCA Animal Hospital in Aurora, IL with rotations in multiple specialties. In addition, Dr. Hanson has 15 years of experience in human radiology as a technologist, manager, and PACS manger as well as 17 years of experience at GE Healthcare in customer training and product development. Affiliations: ACVR, AVMA, ARRT. Professional Interests: Expanding the use of CT in veterinary medicine.
